The checklist of actions in the process of filing a scholarship application
Tips on Scholarship Resources in India
Information and contact details of scholarship trusts in India
Education in a top university in the US or UK is understandably expensive. The costs are prohibitive and the opportunity costs make it almost undesirable, considering the bout of uncertainty and the burden of debt that for a moment makes you imagine yourself to be a Michael Schumacher in an Ambassador. You do feel you could do it if you had some more gas up the tank. A better engine and a more aerodynamic body would have worked wonders. You, Michael Schumacher are destined to run your course in this Hindustan Motors contraption, despite your proven ability. That’s how helpless you may feel as you compare your good GMAT scores with the demand on your wallet. I wouldn’t blame you if you thought the former was much easier.
If all helplessness resulted in failures, there wouldn’t be any Indian studying abroad today. That’s because most of them combine their savings with loans, and if they are both smart and lucky, spice it up with scholarships and grants. ‘Scholarships’ - isn’t that a word so delightfully musical you could almost see yourself smile. There are many scholarship avenues open to an Indian aspiring to study abroad. The only problem is where to go looking for them. The answer is at first easy. Just google the search and look up the results. On second thoughts, the answer isn’t as easy as it appears. This is because there are many things in fine print that might either disqualify you or render your chances thin.
The scholarship search begins with identifying your options. Let us assume you are male, above 30 years, have a reasonable academic record, have some years of work to show, are applying to a few good schools abroad and are looking for a scholarship to fund your studies. How would you start to look for the golden needle in the haystack?
Remember, scholarship foundations and organizations in India are mostly discriminatory as far as age bar is concerned. You will find yourself to be out of favour with most of these foundations if you happen to be on the experienced side of thirty, to use a politically correct expression! Therefore, look at the guys who fit the basic criteria of fulfilling age, gender, language, region and religion criteria. By this, I mean there are grants for Catholics, women, Muslims, Goans or scholarships restricted to applicants from a particular region etc. These categorizations are not meant to discriminate against people; they are created by trusts who want to help out sections of people.
As we set out to shortlist the awards where we must apply, we check out whether we do fit these basic criteria. Having rummaged through the requirements of various types of scholarships then narrowed down your options to a selected few scholarships that completely suit your needs, the next step is to develop a good scholarship application.
To put together a scholarship application that helps your cause, the first thing you need to do is to organize yourself. Make a checklist of the important things you need to do.
The checklist is likely to include the following:
Resume
Transcript
Letters of recommendation
Statement of Purpose
Interview
The scholarship application may include other details too, but let us restrict ourselves to the above details as these are the common materials asked for by most foundations. However you should ideally list out the conditions and requirements of the scholarships that you have decided to apply for. If there are additional materials that have been asked for, you may have to include them in your checklist too.
Resume
Your resume should include you education details, work experience and achievements and career highlights that you want them to know. Resumes in these cases should ideally be a page plus and not too long. This particular aspect is also based on personal experience and hence you may still be the best judge of the length though it must be noted that long resumes aren’t really the best ones here.
Transcript:
If you are required to submit a transcript from your earlier educational institution, you may need to contact the relevant school and ask for a transcript. Some places do take longer time than others and therefore, you should ask for transcripts early on. The best thing for you to do will be to keep additional transcripts when you ask for transcripts during the application process to schools. This will help you stave off some unnecessary headaches. So, keep it in mind - when you ask for transcripts from your college ask for more numbers than you need. You never know what you need till you need them.
Letters of Recommendation:
This is another important part of the scholarship application. The first step here is to choose the right kind of referee. Your uncle or brother may not be the best choice here. Ideally, try and mix it up. Have one professional recommendation from a guy you have worked with and have one academic recommendation from a professor who knows you well enough to write about you. Sometimes professionals face the conundrum of having worked for so long that it’s difficult to get an academic referee. In such a case, try and get as close to the academic reference as possible. If you have attended a workshop etc in the last 2-3 years where there has been someone who oversaw your performance that should work fine. You would also be well advised to explain away the difficulty in meeting the requirement of securing an academic referee for this purpose, if it comes to that, by pointing to your years spent away from school and your closest brush with an academic setting in the last few years being x or y or z.
When you ask someone for a letter of recommendation, explain the purpose clearly to him. Send him your resume and maybe a brief self-profile (ask him if he needs this one), where you should mention the program you are going in for, the expenses, your past career path, your future professional goals and why you think you need and deserve the scholarship. Make he has all information about you and more importantly, he should be on the same wavelength about the purpose of your application and your academic and professional mission. You must give the referee a copy of the scholarship details and also inform him of the deadline of your scholarship application.
After he has written your recommendation, it is appropriate to send him a thank you note.
Statement of Purpose:
You would have written an essay for the admission application or are about to write one.
Scholarship or grant foundations usually ask you to write an essay alongwith the application. If you have already written one as part of the application package, keep it and reorient it for the purpose of the scholarship application. Remember, as with the application package, your essay decides the result for you, all other remaining factors of merit being equal. Make sure your essay is well written and reflects your clarity of goals, commitment to your goal as well as a clear, well defined perspective of the career you have had. You should be able to describe your aims, goals and capabilities convincingly. Write what you believe in. Do not try and bluff your way through. Strategizing should not be confused with bluffing. Try and make an impactful ending so that it leaves an impression.
Interview:
Some scholarship committees take interviews of the final list of selected candidates, like the JN Tata Foundation as a part of the final selection process. Sometimes, they would like to verify the claims in your resume and essay and ensure they are spending their money on the right guy.
Try and do very well at the interview because some foundations stress a lot on the way a candidate conducts himself at these interviews. It is not just the professional knowledge, intellect and academic brilliance they are looking for. You may not have exceptional brilliance but if you have unflinching sincerity, superb commitment, great positive attitude, articulation skills and have good conduct, you are likely to do well here. Interviews, at most places in life are a stage to put your positive attitude to test. If your attitude is positive and temperament sound, you are likely to overcome adverse circumstances and do well.

Tips on Resources in India:
Before I explain the resources available in India, it is pertinent to mention that ones like The Paul Foundation, Rhodes, Inlaks fund the full scholarship towards studies abroad. There are others like the JN Tata Foundation who do not have an age bar on the applicants and have more generous sums doled out as scholarships and interest free loans than other foundations. There are others like K.C. Mahindra Education Trust who value your work experience and more so, any achievement you have under your belt. There are newer ones like the Google 2006 Anita Borg Scholarship Scholarships which are awarded based on the strength of candidates' academic background and demonstrated leadership. The scholarship recipients, selected from the finalists, each received a $10,000 scholarship for the 2006-2007 academic year. Many a times one hears frustrated students wringing their hands in despair at the lack of students grants and such resources in India. We agree they are less, however one needs to delve deeper and you will find trusts ready to part with tiny sums. You add them up and you have a reasonable sum if you are lucky. If your luck is very good and you fit the other criteria, you may even land full scholarships from some of these guys. Whichever way, getting a scholarship comforts your wallet and enhances your resume too. With so many Indian students in the fray, is it a surprise that scholarships are tough. At the same time, remember that scholarships, like admissions and jobs, go to the most persevering and well prepared rather than the most brilliant alone. Therein lies the truth and our hopes.
