The 1st of a series of articles by Deepak Gupta featuring tips to do an MBA abroad
Getting into a top ranked B-School abroad is very different from getting into a top ranked B- School in India. I was looking for a MBA from a Tier - I (Top 30) school in US. Thanks to God that my efforts got answered and I have got admits from three of the Tier - I institutes. In this article I list down my experiences, tips and tricks for being successful in GMAT and B-School applications.

GMAT and Preparation.

What is GMAT?
GMAT is Graduate Management Aptitude Test. The test consists of three sections.

1) Analytical Writing Ability (AWA) Section: This section comprises two Essay questions, and is designed to test a candidate's Analytical approach to an Issue and an Argument. The time allotted for this section is 60 minutes, which is equally divided between Analysis of an Issue and Analysis of an Argument, i.e. each 30 min.
2) Quantitative Section: This section tests the knowledge of basic fundamentals of Mathematics. The section is further divided into two parts based on the types of questions. The two types of questions in this section are Problem Solving (PS) and Data Sufficiency (SC). The time allotted for this section is 75 minutes.
3) Verbal Section: This section is categorized into three parts; Sentence Correction questions, Critical Reasoning questions and Reading Comprehension questions. The time allotted for this section is 75 minutes.

There are altogether 78 multiple-choice questions in the test, 37 in Quantitative Section and 41 in Verbal Section.

When to Start Preparation?
Quantitative section in GMAT is easy and can be easily prepared if one has good grasp of fundamental mathematics. Preparing this section doesn’t require more then 30 days.

AWA section can is a cakewalk for those who have great writing power, but if one is not versed well with writing skills this section require substantial preparation. 15- 20 days of rigorous preparation is sufficient for this.

Verbal Section requires some preparation. If one is good at comprehension this section can be mastered easily but for people like me who are poor in this require a lot of preparation. The preparation for this section may vary from 30 -50 days.

The total time frame one must keep in mind when booking a date for GMAT is around 4-5 months, considering average time devoted of 2-3 hours daily. The time one takes depends on person to person and also on the time one is willing to devote for preparation.

What is the Ideal time to give GMAT?
The Graduate Management Admission Test is available, year-round, at test centers throughout the world. In India GMAT Mumbai center test is available in 4 shifts six days a week.

Ideal time to appear for GMAT is from June to August, though I myself appeared for it in September, but I would advise anyone sincerely considering getting into MBA program for 2007 should do away with his GMAT no later by August 2006. I am advising this because GMAT is just one parameter for getting an admission into a B-School. In fact real test begins after GMAT. Also if unfortunately one messes up his GMAT for the first time, he can conveniently give it again September or October.

The test can be easily registered via phone or online. For further details on registration process visit the websites www.mba.com and www.gmac.com. The link for international locations at gmac is http://www.gmac.com/gmat/appointments/int_locations.shtml

I will be writing about Strategy for Preparation and selecting choosing a school in the next article. I am also posting this series on my yahoo 360 blog.
